What certifications and credentials should I look for when hiring a painter?
There are a few certifications that are an absolute must for any painting contractor. Below you will find a general guideline for what you should ask for from any contractor you’re looking to hire:
1) Is the contractor licensed and insured?
Any quality, professional contractor will show you their state license and insurance. There should be no question as to whether or not the business is registered with the state as this is almost always a minimum requirement, but a real professional will show you they are insured as well. Extra measures like this are a good sign that you’re working with a high quality painter.
2) Is the contractor a PDCA member?
The Painting Decorating Contractors of America has been in existence since 1884 and it’s sole purpose is to educate its members, promoting professionalism and ethics within the painting industry. If a contractor is a registered member of the PDCA it’s a sure sign they’re going to deliver quality and professional work on time.
The education passed on from the PDCA to it’s members includes:
- safety training
- business management
- technical areas of painting
- surface preparation
Look for the PDCA logo on your contractors website, business card or trucks and vehicles.
