Choosing an Interior Color Scheme
Choosing a color scheme for your home can be as challenging as it is rewarding. But you don’t have to be an interior designer to enjoy a pleasing palette. Many of the same tools and tricks designers use are available to you as well. A good way to begin is by asking yourself some simple questions:
- What existing colors are in my home?
Avoid the temptation to start planning your room’s makeover by deciding on the color of your paint. Instead, consider the colors that already exist in your carpet, furniture, and drapes. These colors are more difficult and expensive to change than your wall color, so its prudent to select a color that coordinates well.
- What kind of floor plan do I have?
If you have an open floor plan, you not only need to consider the color scheme for that room, but how it will look juxtaposed against the colors in the surrounding spaces. You may want to unify the space with the same wall color, while changing the color of the ceiling and accessories, or you may choose to use different colors that coordinate well with one another, using natural boundaries, such as the corner of a wall as a place to switch colors.
- What is the function of the room?
Colors arouse our emotions in different ways, so it’s important to consider what emotion you want to evoke when people walk into your room. Reds, yellows, and oranges are bright and exciting colors commonly used in kitchens and family rooms where people gather to have fun and fellowship. Some shades of blues and greens are calming, and are commonly employed in bedrooms and places where people go to relax. Carefully consider the purpose of the room before you decide on a color palette.
