How Do I Prevent Peeling Paint?

Prevent Peeling Paint | 603-969-6364 | DeVuono PaintingOver time, paint can become brittle and begin to crack and flake as it loses the elasticity to expand and contract. However, most of the time when flaking occurs, it is not due to age, but to poor workmanship, especially when it occurs on the walls and ceilings of your home.

Fortunately, the painting and drying techniques required to keep your home looking beautiful for years are not difficult. Here are some tips to follow on your next home painting project:

  • Clean the Painting Surface

Dust, grit, grime, and dirt not only create an unsightly texture beneath a coat of paint, but they also prevent the paint from properly adhering to the surface, causing it to crack and peel prematurely. Before you begin painting, clean the surface and allow it to dry thoroughly before applying the first coat.

  • Prepare Glossy Finishes

Paint does not adhere well to glossy coatings, such as those you may have applied to your walls. If your surface has been treated with a gloss finish, use a de-glosser to strip this layer or sand the walls with rough paper. Remember to clean the walls thoroughly after this process and allow it adequate time to dry.

As we have already alluded to, proper drying time is essential for ensuring the paint adheres properly to the surface. This not only applies to water and de-glossers, but also to previous coats of paint. Always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for drying time, which can usually be found on the back of the can. Allow additional drying time if the painting area is poorly ventilated, or if it is cold or humid.

  • Use the Proper Primer

Primer provides an ideal surface for the paint to adhere to and helps prevent premature cracking and peeling. However, not all primers are suitable for all surfaces. Make sure you do your research and choose the proper one for your project.
